High Blood Pressure Affected By Sleep Quality
When sleeping, humans shift in and out of several phases of sleep. The most restorative type of sleep is deep or slow-wave sleep and a study reported in Hypertension found that older men with the lowest levels of deep sleep were at increased risk of high blood pressure.
Most previous studies of sleep and hypertension have focused on sleep disordered breathing or overall duration of sleep. This study looked at the role of sleep architecture instead. This new data adds to the evidence that sleep, particularly slow wave or deep sleep, plays a very important role in our cardiovascular health.
This information should be of interest to the long suffering bed partners of people who snore or suffer from sleep apnea. While the sleep apnea sufferer may waken many times each night they immediately fall back asleep. Most times the bed partner is wakened by the loud snoring and gasping but is unable to return quickly to sleep, typically spending much of the night tossing and turning.
Remove the snoring and gasping from the equation and both partners can have a complete night of sleep. Oral appliance therapy can treat the obstructive sleep apnea or snoring without complicated masks and hoses.
If you believe your bed partner suffers from obstructive sleep apnea or excessive snoring please contact Dr. John Highsmith in Clyde, NC at 828-627-9282 today. We will be glad to schedule a consultation to find out more about this sleep breathing disorder and arrange a sleep test to get a diagnosis.
