Implants: your Permanent Solution to Tooth Loss
- Posted on: Aug 15 2016
Permanent teeth. By definition, you would think that these fixtures would be in your mouth from the time they grow in, without fail. If we were to ask you if you think you may lose a permanent tooth, you may initially say “of course not, it’s permanent!” On second thought, you then may consider that, in old age, teeth can be lost. In reality, over 25% of adults in their forties have already lost at least one permanent tooth. This problem can be quite concerning, unless you know about the benefits of dental implants.
Why Implants are the New Norm
- Dental implants are small cylindrical posts that replace roots, not teeth. This process leads to stabilization that is so close to natural teeth that you may not even be able to tell the difference.
- The degree of stabilization reached with implants means that you can chew whatever foods you like. This is possible if just one tooth is replaced, or if a full denture needs to be affixed to a reliable foundation.
- Think of how you feel when you have healthy, attractive teeth. Or how you would feel, if you wouldn’t describe your teeth as healthy or attractive right now. The confidence that comes from stable tooth replacement and artificial teeth that look natural allows patients to feel at ease in social and work situations.
- As artificial roots, implants continue the very important work of stimulating bone regeneration in the jaw. Dentures and other forms of tooth replacement that sit on the gums cannot do this. It is for this reason that a person who has worn dentures for quite some time may look older. For bone tissue to grow, there needs to be a transfer of force from biting and chewing. This can only take place through roots, or a suitable replacement like implant posts.
There are numerous reasons why dental implants are the new norm in tooth replacement. Patients of Dr. Highsmith receive care from a dentist who has gone above and beyond to perfect his technique. In addition to being a Fellow of the Misch Implant Institute, Dr. Highsmith is also a Diplomate of The International Congress of Oral Implantologists, and one of very few accredited cosmetic dentists in our area.
